Bertrand Burgalat - The Genius of

Yet another fine offering from Bungalow. This album is a compilation of songs produced by the incredible French producer Bertrand Burgulat. You may not have heard of him, but chances are you've heard of his work on other artists he's produced such as Nick Cave, St. Etienne, Air, Pulp, Mick Harvey and Kahimi Karie. I first heard his work on the amazing album by Valerie LeMercier. I'm not sure exactly how to describe his sound, but I think he's one of the few producers still out there that knows how to make pop music with analog instruments. I know nothing about recording really, but even to my naive ears, there is kind of a warm quality to all the sounds in his recordings. He doesen't shy away from using digital sounds as well and they seem to be treated with the same delicate care as all the other sounds. It's really a nice experience listening to his songs. You can hear every note by every instrument. I can understand why all the artists want work with him. There are also a couple of his personal recordings in this compilation. He says in the liner notes that "I haven't yet succeeded to express what I'd like through music...", so I'm looking forward to hearing more of hist stuff as he undoubtedly will continue to try and get closer to express what he'd like.
